How Do Ball Vaporizers Work?
A ball vaporizer uses a heated chamber filled with small heat-retaining balls, typically made from ruby, quartz, or ceramic. An electric heating element heats the chamber and balls, creating a reservoir of stored thermal energy.
When you inhale, air is pulled through the heated ball chamber and into the bowl. The hot airflow passes through the dry herb, rapidly transferring heat and producing vapor. The high thermal mass of the balls helps the heater maintain temperature during the draw, allowing ball vapes to produce dense vapor and efficiently extract a bowl.
Most ball vapes rely primarily on convection heating, but the exact heating style depends on the heater and bowl design. Some configurations can combine convection with conductive heat from the bowl or heater for a hybrid extraction.
Injector and diffuser setups also change how the heater interacts with the bowl. An injector-style heater directs hot airflow through a smaller opening into the bowl, while a diffuser-style heater generally covers a wider area of the bowl. Depending on the design, a diffuser setup may introduce more conductive heat in addition to convection.
